Teacher - Mervyn Short
Mervyn Short lives in Rustington, West Sussex, on the south coast of England. He is a member of the Berks/Hants/Surrey Border Branch and Brighton Branch of the RSCDS. His interests include ballet and contemporary dance, classical music, theatre, travel, walking and Scottish country dancing. Mervyn started Scottish country dancing nearly fifty years ago and qualified as a teacher three years later with the Imperial Society Teachers of Dancing. Around the same time, he started Highland dancing and qualified to teach after passing medal tests. He then taught children and adults regularly at all levels. In 1995, Mervyn earned his RSCDS Full Certificate. Since then, he has taught at day and weekend schools in the UK, Europe, America, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, and South Africa. He also regularly teaches at Summer & Winter Schools. In January 2016, he retired to devote more time to dancing. He is an assessor for children’s medal tests and tutors and examines candidates for the Society’s teaching examinations. He is very keen to maintain the technique and traditions of Scottish country dancing. Still, he appreciates that it is an evolving dance form, and in 2009, he published a book of dances with an accompanying CD. Since then, he has had four other dances published by RSCDS. Mervyn was a founder of the South East Region Teachers’ Association and has served three times on the Education & Training Committee at HQ.
Musician - Ian Robertson
Ian is from Buckinghamshire and comes from a family steeped in Scottish music. His great-grandmother was a fine pianist who is known to have played piano for the great fiddler-composer James Scott Skinner before the turn of the 20th century.
Ian is a familiar face on the Scottish dance scene. He is most often seen now leading his own band on accordion although he regularly plays fiddle with a variety of leading musicians. A regular at RSCDS Winter and Summer Schools, he has played for weekend schools, functions and festivals across the UK and throughout the world.
An accomplished composer, Ian has 2 volumes of tunes in print and more in the pipeline. His most recent solo fiddle recording is a CD entitled “Robertson: a musical heritage”, a collection spanning 3 centuries with all of the tunes written either for a Robertson, or by a Robertson.
His new website will launch in Autumn 2024 and will include free downloads of all of his compositions. Look out for www.ianrobertsonmusic.co.uk
